When you walk by a teacher’s classroom you might hear students talking or the dull sound of pages in a book turning. That is not the case when you walk by the band room. The band is under the direction of 2nd year teacher, Mr. Lane. Mr. Lane has brought the band to an all-time high. This year he will be accompanied by Sherry Hobs, Colorguard instructor. The drum major this year is, Senior Kaleigh Butler.

The theme for last year’s show was “Pirates of the Caribbean”. The Marching Band won several awards at competitions in Southern Maryland, including Best Percussion and Best Auxiliary. They ended their amazing season placing sixth at the USBands National Championships, with the highest score in school history of 91.35 out of 100. Mr. Lane says “Last year, the Marching Band had its most successful season in school history.” The band was so successful that over the summer they were invited to perform in Fairfax, Virginia for the Fourth of July Parade. They performed “Firework” by Katy Perry.

The band is busy preparing for the 2013 season. The theme for them this year is “Dark Shadows”. “The show depicts a group of travelers lost in the dark forest who find themselves under a heavy curse. The travelers try to battle their way out but slowly lose hope and succumb to the curse of the dark forest forever” explains Mr. Lane. The Band will have more than eight competitions this year! They will also be at every home football game.

The band members work together so well to create beautiful music. They have the ability to paint the audience a musical picture. It is truly remarkable. Spread the word! Everyone needs to come out and see the amazing 2013 Marching Band!
