It is currently October at LHS, which means one thing; costumes. Every high school in the county is conducting their spirit week, and every child in St. Mary’s has flocked to Spirit Halloween with their parents to buy a Halloween costume. It’s a lot of dressing up, and it can be overwhelming – especially if you are like me, and don’t enjoy dressing up very much.
I’m not smart about that kind of thing – finding little details that make a character costume perfectly accurate, or buying an incredible piece at a thrift stop – and every year without fail, I make no effort to dress up and then feel intense F.O.M.O when I see everyone’s awesome outfits. So I decided to ask some experts, for me and for you, about easy ways you can dress up.
To do this, I turned to the seniors. They are making the most of their last year at LHS by going all out for Spirit Week! I’ve loved seeing the outfits of one student in particular; Gavin Deitz, a fellow journalist and dressing-up expert. He gave me a great tip; he said he usually finds a lot of great stuff in his parents’ closet. The lives our parents had before us were crazy, and chances are they have the leather jacket or wild red heels you are looking for. Ask your parents – or any adult, really – to borrow some of their clothes for a costume!
Next, I asked Sarah Scott for some dress-up advice. She has consistently shown up with themed outfits for Spirit Week, and I still remember watching her rock that blond wig in her role as Sharpay in LHS’s High School Musical last year. Similar to Deitz’s advice, she suggested checking out thrift stores around the county. Not only are they cheap, but they have eclectic collections of weird, old pieces of clothes; perfect for a time period costume or a movie character!
With that great advice in mind, I hope that you will be able to create the costumes of your dreams this October. I’ll see you at Vintage Values!
