Every May the American Cross, World Waterpark Association, National Recreation and Park Association and the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance promote water safety month and summer is approaching. It is important to know everything about staying safe around the water.Even though this month is pushed towards younger kids. It is important to know these things whether you are comfortable around the water or not.

These organizations put together a website online that  provides a lot of information on water safety month and tips to help keep everyone safe this summer season. Their website provides seven simple tips to stay safe around water. Their first tip is to make sure that if you have a child around water make sure that they know how to swim whether it’s your sibling or a kid you are babysitting. It is extremely important to make sure they know how to swim. Their second tip is simply just to learn to swim! There should ot be shame around not being able to swim it is common thing around older kids or adults and it is ok. But you should learn to swim because it is such an important skill to stay safe. Their third tip is to know where all the drains are located in the pool. Their fourth tip similarly  is to make sure that they have drain cover over them. These can be very dangerous if you swim near them because hair, limbs, jewelry, and bathing suits can get stuck in them. The fifth tip is to if you have a pool at home make sure that at your home pool you install necessary barriers, covers, and alarms. These help keep children from going in the pool unsupervised.Their sixth tip is to get CPR certified. This is a very useful skil and could help save a life not just around the water. Their final tip is to take their water safety pledge. You can find it here https://www.poolsafely.gov/pledge/ to help start the call to staying  safe around water.
