On October 1st, 2025, the Federal Government began its fourth shutdown since 1980. This happened due to partisan disputes over the federal budget for the 2026 fiscal year. The last government shutdown began on December 22, 2018 and lasted 35 days. At the time of writing, this current shutdown has lasted 25 days, already making it the second longest in U.S. history.
Anyone planning on applying for student aid will have problems. Federal Aid programs like FAFSA are currently on hold. Applications are open, but responses won’t come until the shutdown ends. For seniors preparing for college this may result in complications with scholarships and college applications.
Most federal jobs, notably the military, are also not being paid, so anyone with parents in the military will be feeling the effects of the shutdown. Active duty will still be working, but paychecks will be paused until a new budget is agreed upon. This does not apply for on-base services like the Exchange and Commissary which will remain open.
The best thing you can do is stay informed. Check your sources as this topic is very divisive. Our counselors here at LHS are open to talk if you have any questions. Mrs. Wilson in the Career Center is also available to talk about college applications and your future post high school.
