Here in St. Marys County and many other counties in Maryland were blessed with an extra week-long break due to the snowpocalypse that swept through the northeast over the last week of January. Averaging temps of 26॰ throughout the week, with lows of 10॰ along with 3-6 inches of snow here in st marys county alone!
The snow came quickly, starting on Saturday night and quickly building up after freezing rains on Sunday. Sadly the snow wasn’t really…snow, everything that was soft and fluffy snow quickly turned into sheets of slippery rock hard ice after Sunday’s freezing rains. This cut the fun short for some but not for all. The bBreton Bbay golf course remained open so kids could sled down the large hill behind the clubhouse while some kids “ice skated” along the sheets of ice in their driveways and yards. But the biting cold that followed kept most of us inside watching movies and making fires to warm up, while others were 3 feet deep in their driveways shoveling snow.
School was cancelled for the week for Ccharles, Sst. Mmarys and Ccalvert county schools. Reports came in each day which allowed for some skeptics if we’d get the full week off. Some said we’d be back by Thursday, others preached that the whole week would be cancelled. Most schools were already facing a professional day on Friday of that week so by Wednesday people stated that it would be ridiculous for us to go in on Thursday just to not go on Friday. Sure enough schools were cancelled for the whole week including a 2 hour delay on February 2nd when we were to return.
This return to school raised some opinions within the student body, some saying we should’ve stayed home until the ice had fully melted, others saying that it was time for us to go back to school. I interviewed a few students on their opinions and here’s what they had to say.
Cole Merritt, a tenth grader here at Leonardtown stated that it was time for us to return to school saying “some of us hard workers stayed here to clear out the parking lot for students and staff to use.” Assuming he didn’t want his hard work to go to waste I can understand why he’d want to come back to school. Maylee Charles, an AP student here at Leonardtown spoke on the same topic and said “as someone with an AP class, I believe it was time to come back to school. But I would appreciate a 2 hour delay for the rest of the week.” I agree with her take since we were gone for so long and students may struggle to keep up with their work.
Our students gave us some great opinions and we here at LHS journalism hope you enjoyed your extra winter break! Have it be you stayed at home and snuggled up with a fire, or had snowball fights and went sledding! Stay warm raiders!
