MLB Playoffs Preview

Josh Moody, Senior Staff Writer

The 2018 MLB Playoffs will start next Tuesday on October 2nd. The American League bracket is set and the National League side isn’t quite finished yet. There are only a few games left in the regular season, but those couple of games are very important to those three National League teams fighting for the last NL Wild Card spot. This time of year is when things start to heat up.

In the American League, the three division champs are the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, and Cleveland Indians, they are the same three teams that won their division last year. Filling in the two AL Wild Card spots are the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees, but the Yankees have home field advantage for the Wild Card game. The number one overall seed belongs to the Red Sox, who have home field advantage all throughout the playoffs. The Astros are the number two seed, and the Indians are the number three seed. The Astros will play the Indians in the AL Division series, and the Red Sox will play the winner of the Yankees and Athletics Wild Card game. The Red Sox, Astros, Indians, and Yankees have played well pretty much all year and that is why they are all in the playoffs. But the Oakland Athletics had a terrible start to the year and it had looked like they would be the same team that they were last year, but they quickly turned it around. Since the All-Star break, the Athletics have had one of MLB’s best records, and they have scored an astonishing amount of runs. They are definitely a team to watch out for this post-season. They are a true Cinderella Story.

In the National League, only the Atlanta Braves have clinched their division so far. But if the Chicago Cubs and the Colorado Rockies can hold onto their slim lead, they will be the last two division champs. Fighting for that last wild card spot is the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Milwaukee Brewers have clinched the first wild card spot in the National League. The Brewers are clicking on all cylinders right now, and they are a very dangerous team to play. It will be interesting to watch how the rest of the NL bracket will play out over the next few days and see who claims the last spot available in the playoffs. It’s crazy how the Dodgers went to the World Series last year and they have a chance of not making it to the playoffs this year.

This should be a very interesting playoffs for baseball fans. There is so much young talent between all of the teams, I guess you could say the future of baseball is very bright. There are also multiple teams with 100 wins, the Red Sox and the Astros. The Yankees are only one win away from joining the 100 win club, also having tied the record for most homeruns in a season by one team. Will the Boston Red Sox, the team with the most wins win it all this year, or will a underdog, like the Oakland Athletics or Atlanta Braves, pull off something magical? The baseball world will know when it is all said and done and there is only one team left standing in late October, or maybe even very early November. The Major League Baseball Playoffs are shaping up to be great this year so make sure to keep up to date with all of the action.
