As the school year comes to a close, Leonardtown High School students are beginning to make summer plans. Besides completing summer assignments and for some, starting college applications, many students will be going on vacation. A vacation for some is the relatively short three-hour ride to Ocean City and for others it is the eleven-hour plane ride to Hawaii or even to Europe. Many people say that they want to travel someplace warm with beaches, new people, and restaurants. Others say that they want to escape the heat of St. Mary’s County and travel somewhere cold but still beautiful such as Alaska .
A few popular places students seem to be going this summer include Florida, Myrtle Beach, and Virginia Beach. One student, George Adamson, a junior at Leonardtown High School, is going to Aruba, a beautiful island in the Caribbean. He says, “I am going on a cruise for my sister’s graduation. I’ve never left the country before so I am pretty excited! ” Many other students will go on cruises into the Caribbean, Mexico, and Alaska. The most popular cruise line for students is Carnival Cruises, where there is a swimming pool, golf course, spa, and lots of food all on board. Other, less touristy vacation destinations include beach houses and private vacation spots. Hannah Connelly, a junior, says, “Every year we rent a beach house in North Carolina with our family friends. We lie out on the beach and ride bikes. It’s relaxing and fun!”
No matter where students are going this summer, they all seem pretty excited to get the school year over with and out into the sun. Even students who are not going on vacation can look forward to fun in St. Mary’s county with boating, crabbing, and hanging with friends. Summer two-thousand-twelve should be one to remember!
