On February 2nd, 1887 Groundhogs Day became what it is today. It has continued to fall every February 2nd since 1887. It is supposed to determine if we have 6 more weeks of winter or not. How does this day work? Well, like in the name a ground hog comes out of its hibernation hole. If the groundhog sees its shadow and gets scared it means that we have six more weeks of winter. But if the groundhog doesn’t see its shadow then here comes spring. It can be exciting or it can be very disappointing depending if you do or don’t want anymore winter.
This year’s results disappointed many and left many people upset because everyone already is ready for the summer of 2026. Many say that this year’s summer is going to be one of the best. But because the groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow unfortunately means that we have six more weeks of winter. The winter of 2025 he again predicted six more weeks of winter. But it hasn’t always been like this before because in the winters of 2024, 2020, 2019, 2016 and 2013 to be exact he didn’t see his shadow 21 times. The ground hog did not see his shadow and there wasn’t six weeks of winter. There hasn’t just been one groundhog to have a prediction. Punxsutawney Phil is just more accurate when it comes to these predictions. But the other few groundhogs are Staten Island Chuck, and Buckeye Chuck.
I asked a couple of students and staff here at LHS how they felt about having 6 more weeks of winter.
Bea Lovell- “I’m mad, I don’t like being cold and personally I think that ground hog is evil because he is from Philadelphia.”
Keelin Miller- “I looking forward to more snow to more snow to play but not looking for more. I believe the ground hog doesn’t actually tell if we get more winter the majority of the time the ground hog is wrong. Mother nature has its own agenda.”
Overall, Groundhogs day is still a celebration today and Ground Hogs Day can make people feel upset or happy depending on their opinion and their views on whether they like winter or if they prefer summer.
