Fantasy Football

Have you ever wanted to make a dream team of sorts? Have you ever thought about how good a team would be if there were a few more big name players?

Fantasy Football gives you the opportunity to live out those “what ifs.” In most Fantasy Football leagues, you draft players based on their skill levels. The better the player, the earlier they are drafted. I asked the Principal’s son, Ryan Montgomery, why he enjoyed playing Fantasy Football and he told me this, “I enjoy it because it gives me an opportunity to put a lot of superstars on one team; also it gives me something else to watch for on Sunday.” However, some leagues have Auction drafts, where you bid on players with a limited amount of fake money. In that case, the better the player is, the more “money” they cost.

There is a lot of strategy involved in drafting a Fantasy Football team. Running backs, for example, are usually drafted early because of the limited amount of talent at the position. Whereas, kickers should be drafted in the last or second to last rounds because they do not produce the same amount of points as players at other positions. Another thing to look at is bye weeks, or weeks off. When drafting backups, you want to make sure that your backups don’t have the same bye week as your starter at that position, that would be a waste of a pick. Also, you don’t want to overload your team by drafting multiple players that play the same position. The different strategies that you use and a little bit of luck here and there help determine how well your Fantasy Football team will do this year.

Strategies for Auction Drafts are a little bit different than those of a regular draft. The biggest stars in the NFL tend to wipe out a good portion of your “salary cap,” however kickers and Defenses will go for a very low price. So with Auction drafts, you can either decide to center your team on one MVP type player, or you could use your money wisely and draft multiple decent players for medium prices and still get a few good players. Auction drafts take much longer than regular drafts because the rounds can last so much longer.

Fantasy Football is a very popular activity from teens to middle aged adults to even some older folks. I know a large amount of people who play Fantasy Football. Eric Pope gave me a second of his time and told me this about Fantasy Football, “I am an avid Fantasy Football player and I must say, I’m pretty good.”
