Things to Do Before Leaving for College

With the school year coming to an end, us seniors will be heading off to college soon. Although that means no summer homework, there’s plenty to be done in preparation for college.

If you don’t have one already, start a workout routine. To prevent the notorious “freshman fifteen,” create a workout you enjoy and make sure to take full advantage of the summer to keep active. You’ll also have time to eat healthy foods, rather than grabbing a granola bar on the way out of the house that you hope will last you the entire school day. Although you’ll have the dining hall in college, this is a great time to test your cooking skills before you need them in the real world.

One of the exciting parts about starting college is getting a new room! Summer is a good time to plan how you want your dorm to look. Once classes start, you won’t want to dedicate any time to it. Pinterest is always a great place to find ideas for your dorm. There are also sales at the time when students are moving in, so keep an eye out! Some of these stores include Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Staples.

Recognize the people who have helped you develop. Send thank you notes to the teachers, coaches, and mentors who have supported and encouraged you through your life thus far. You’ll want these people to know how much you appreciate them before you move on to college.

Spend time with your high school friends and family. This might be one of the last times you’ll get together with some of your high school friends. Not counting the next three summers, this is (hopefully) the last time you’ll be living at home, so make it count!

You won’t want to come home to a dirty room this Christmas, so make sure to give your room a good scrubbing before leaving. Bonus: It will also make your mom really happy. In addition, this is a great time to donate old clothing you’re sure not to keep through your college years.

Don’t wait until the last minute to pack! Even though you’ll probably do it anyway, packing before the night you have to leave allows you to bring the exact things you want. You won’t underpack or overpack. Underpacking will lead you to spend more money when you get to college and overpacking will leave your brand new dorm overcrowded. If you need help figuring how to pack and what to bring to college, there are plenty of articles on the internet ready for you to read.

Senior year has zipped by for many of us but we still have the next few weeks or so to prepare for college and to commemorate the things we have done and the people who have changed us. We still have time to appreciate little old Leonardtown High School.
