TV Review: Riverdale

Over a month ago, a new television show aired on CW.  Only seven episodes in, and the show has already gained a lot of popularity among young adult viewers. With crisis and suspense sweeping across the television screen, the show has tangled it’s audience in love triangles, murder cases, and high school drama. This show is called Riverdale, an american drama teen series based on Archie Comics.

Archie Andrews is one of the main characters. He is a high school sophomore and conflicted about following his music, or his father’s wishes for him to become a football player. Elizabeth Cooper is another character. She’s been shut in and kept away from the world by strict parents, but gradually finds her own way through friends. Veronica Lodge is a confident and silver-tongued teenage girl just returning to the town of Riverdale. And “Jughead” Jones is the narrator of the series. He’s undergoing his own self-conflicting issues. As these characters come together, the world blurs and bleeds around them until they find themselves smack in the middle of an unsolved murder case of one of their classmates. They band together and delve deeper into these clandestine issues, they learn about even more skeletons in the closet than they could ever imagine.

This next paragraph contains spoilers, so if you’re interested in the series, avert your eyes. In the first episode, we are introduced to our narrator, Jughead Jones, who begins to analyze a recent tragedy that occurred within the town.

Jason Blossom was pronounced dead after drowning in the middle of a lake. As many people were close to him, the whole episode portrays grief from multiple characters. The first episode also contains many high school cliches that will cause you to roll your eyes and scoff, but also find yourself giggling from the excessive humor. At the end of the episode, a shocking revelation breaks through that turns the whole story on it’s heels.

Riverdale is an excellent show that will keep you on the edge of your seat, anticipating what will come next.
